Hackett Edge Pro chisel resting on a walnut bench in the golden afternoon workshop light
Est. 2024

I've been a carpenter for 25 years. I started on the tools at 17, and I'm still on them now at 42.

Over the years, I've spent countless hours sharpening chisels — investing in stones, guides, and polishing compounds to get the sharpest edge I could. It became a bit of an obsession. But I also noticed something on every site I worked: most of my colleagues never quite got their chisels as sharp as they could be. Not because they didn't care, but because proper sharpening takes time, equipment, and practice that most working carpenters just don't have.

Then there's the other problem — damage. Drop a chisel on concrete, catch a hidden nail, or just wear it down over months of hard use, and you're back to the sharpening station. Or worse, working with a dull tool.

"One evening, while grinding away at yet another damaged edge, the idea hit me: what if the tip was replaceable?"

The Idea Behind Edge Pro

The Hackett Edge Pro is a chisel with a replaceable tip — pre-sharpened to a standard most tradespeople would struggle to achieve themselves without serious dedication, and priced to be genuinely disposable.

I wanted the tips to cost around £1 each. Because when you think about it, the cost of a replacement tip is nothing compared to the time spent sharpening. Whether that's your own time in the shed, or lost productivity on site.

No more sharpening. No more working with dull tools. Just swap the tip and get back to work.

Not My First Invention

This isn't my first time bringing a tool to market. I previously invented a hinge jig that I licensed to Trend Routing, which became their Skeleton Jig. I later sold the patent to them outright.

That experience taught me what it takes to go from an idea on the back of an envelope to a product on the shelves. It's not easy — but I've done it before, and I'm doing it again.
