The Engineering Deep Dive

Why we abandoned conventional billet machining in favour of DMLS 3D-printed Maraging steel and Japanese SK4 blade metallurgy.

Additive Manufacturing 01

DMLS: Direct Metal Laser Sintering

Rather than carving away metal from a solid billet, Hackett Edge Pro chisel bodies are additive-manufactured from micron-fine powdered alloy. A high-energy precision laser sinters the metal layer-by-layer at the molecular level, creating a 99.9% dense component with internal stress-relieving geometry and ergonomic balance unattainable by subtractive CNC alone.

Process: Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF/DMLS)
Layer Thickness: 30–50 µm powder sintering
Advantage: Zero directional grain weakness under mallet shock
Aerospace & Motorsport 02

Maraging Steel M300 Grade

Maraging (martensitic-aging) steel is an ultra-high-strength iron-nickel alloy hardened by cobalt, molybdenum, and titanium intermetallic precipitates. Originally engineered for rocket motor casings, centrifuge rotors, and Formula 1 motorsport drivetrains, M300 delivers tensile strength exceeding 2,000 MPa with extraordinary fracture toughness and zero brittle failure under violent mallet strikes.

Alloy System: Fe-Ni-Co-Mo-Ti (M300 Grade)
Tensile Yield: >2,000 MPa (300 ksi)
Applications: Rocket engines, motorsport shafts, Hackett chisel bodies

Japanese SK4 High Carbon Steel Tips

For the cutting edge, where razor keenness and clean timber shearing are paramount, production chisels deploy Japanese SK4 high carbon tool steel. Renowned worldwide for its tight carbide matrix and ultra-clean composition, SK4 takes an exquisite mirror edge ground to 25° only (no micro-bevel grinding). Deep sub-zero cryogenic quenching hardens the steel to 61–63 HRC for relentless edge retention across hardwoods.

Steel Grade: Japanese SK4 High Carbon (JIS G4401)
Hardness: 61–63 HRC (Sub-Zero Cryo-Treated)
Cutting Bevel: 25° only (no micro-bevel)
